Tajikistan. Romit gorge.

2008-10-26| Askar Isabekov

Today is my this month first birding tour. Day is sunny but windy. In Romit gorge but correctly in its first branch gorge I saw a lot of birds. All the same wild (even comparative wild) nature very distinguishes on city. Today I haven't seen any Mynahs, Sparrows or Laughing Dove, no one bird specific to city. Today's common birds are Eversmann's and Blue-capped Redstarts. Both species number were several tens each, but Eversmann's Redstarts number was a few more. Eversmann's Redstarts were observed mainly in bush, but Blue-capped one were mostly on the border of bushes and honeysuckle field. Redstarts searched as yet abundant insects both in bushes and honeysuckles. From time to time birds drunk the water on one only pool on the road. It's beholding on close distance that at Blue-capped Redstarts males have brownish tips of feathers, therefore birds look some dimmer.

Three times I saw Black-breasted Tits, once alone bird, once the pair and once three birds. Tits searched insects on bark of walnuts, ash and fig trees. One Tit even drummed the bark to draw the eat. Black-breasted Tits behaviors very actively, uninterruptedly flew from one tree to another and called one another.

Twice I saw Black-throated Accentors. One bird fed together with Brambling on the field but flock of three birds fed in the shadow of fig tree where searched eat in the wet sand between the stones. I saw Bramblings also two time by one bird each time. Total two males and one female.

Raptors. About 9 am three birds hovered in the sky. They didn't soar but moved. Adult Lammergeier flew by the gorge but Golden Eagle and Eurasian Griffon-Vulture moved along the slope. Very rapidly birds kept dark. I saw Golden Eagle once again, it flew by very low and hid the slope further ascended and flew to another slope. Except these large birds I saw one Sparrowhawk. I beheld it even bird flew from bushes and very rapidly hid over the trees. I only spied bar tail. Near villages I saw the Long-legged Buzzards. One of them was run by alone Carrion Crow; another one sat on the pole searching the victim on mowed field, further abruptly downed, captured anything (probably rat), flew some meters and became to eat the trophy; third Buzzard flew faraway over Kafirnigan river with the Crows escort.

Abundant Blackbirds fed in the bushes but mountain Blackbirds are very wild and mostly weren't visible but hearable only. On leaves Warblers searched insects (probably Hume's Warblers) but in a little number (I saw only 4 birds) and I couldn't observe them. Other birds were glimpse only. Turkestan Tit, Black-throated Thrush, Chaffinch, several Streaked Laughingthrushes. I heard Chukars in mountains and other birds in bushes. It were same Laughingthrushes, Blackbirds and Redstarts.
