Bird of wishes - Asian Paradise Flycatcher!

2021-06-18| Viktoriya Zvyaginceva

At last was on a trip to Paradise Flycatcher. I have thought about it for a long time, but made it spontaneously. I have made a wish before a trip – find a White-throated Robin. And it was also time for Pratincoles, according to Malik.
Sveta Baskova made me a plan. So here I am, in Berkara gorge, together with Grigoriy Shakula. The day started unordinary. We were not allowed to go through Tau Samal camp because of the carantine, so we passed it by. Saw a nest, remaining me the one, I was looking for, but there were only Grey Flycatchers, Golden Orioles, and so on. Went further and suddenly notice a cherished orange splash between the benches. We found a nest and did a stakeout. A couple of Paradise Flycatchers was flying around without making a break. We didn`t understand, what was going on. Maybe it was a nesting, it didn`t look like hatching or chick feeding. A few hours in a stakeout made no sense – I only took a blurred shot, Georgiy – pair of non-full shots. We went back disappointed.
On the way back we saw children from the camp with a tent, preparing a place for tomorrow arrival of the rest. I had a little voice in my head: it was Thursday, the weekend was comming, and it is possible to shoot only on weekdays, cause children would scary the birds. The scoutmaster remembered the ornithologists (he names this way everyone who takes pictures of the birds) Georgiy and Malik. He said that it is better to come in September, when the fledglings do not allow adults to fly far away. And the fact that since the nests are low enough to the ground, the children steal the eggs from there. "Who doesn't like paradise flycatchers?" - he asked rhetorically, and made an advice to look for them closer to the camp. Indeed, we met 3-4 couples near the camp. We bypassed them at the beginning of the visit to the gorge. There was a nest with a chick, and a posing handsome male, whom we shooted from the back countless times. And we even made a video. Only those who have never spent a day in vain near the cherished goal, will not understand out joy. The result of the Berkara gorge is 5 pairs of flycatchers, 3 nests and the understanding that the chicks have already been hatched.
The White-throated Robin was not found in the neighboring gorge, but this does not upset me much, cause the main purpose of the trip has been achieved. On the way back, we met the Pratincoles in a shallow puddle, which were mentioned by Malik. For me, this is also a lifer.
The next day we stopped at the beautiful Kornilovskoye Lake, filled with clear water. It is almost already fenced off for carnal pleasures - sheds, trestle beds, houses and a local young boy collecting tribute for the entry, who shows us with gestures that if we appeared here for intime purposes, then we need to pay extra. There are few birds: warblers, night herons, hoopoe, wood pigs, mynahs - that's the whole catch. You can meet them here in the late afternoon, when it is quieter.
In Kokbulak (Sairam-Ugam branch) we left the car near the farthest of the trestle beds. Orioles, a bluebird, and a woodpecker (white-winged or large motley?), which Georgiy managed to make a photo of, were flying by. We trudged under the scorching sun up the mountain from the shadow of the trees. There Katuntsev Sasha's call catches me (yes, there was no connection for a long time). I was talking about the paradise flycatcher, complaining about the absence of birds. Sasha supported me with Askar's motto - everything will be fine with a good mood! We retturned to the car, had a tea party, and there began the flight of amount of paradise flycatchers, gray flycatchers, almost elusive golden oriols, singing blackbirds, nightingales, cooing turtle doves. And now these paradise and gray flycatchers simply flickered before our eyes, shimmering in the sun with bright colors of fireworks. This was the moment when you realize that your life is good and your dreams came true. The paradise result of this gorge is 3 nests, 4-5 pairs (they were all sitting too close to understand the exact number). The incubation of eggs is not finished, but you need to shoot on weekdays, because in Saturday it`s barbecue time. Both the main bird of the day and the second bird of the day is the paradise flycatcher, and the third bird of the day is the gray flycatcher, because now you can't get away from it!
Many thanks to Georgiy, who accompanied me during the trip.
